Using the new to recreate the old

wi8390.jpgThere is something inherently interesting about using the latest technology and software to mimic the effect of something old. One such technique I came across recently mimics the output of an old 1988 Russian Lomo camera. Upon more research about this ‘look’ and the camera – I found that the camera has an entire following and somewhat of an artform to itself because of the unique character of the images made with it.

lomowinter.jpgI found some Photoshop actions as well as Lightroom presets that were made to mimic the effect of something taken with one of these cameras. They definitely give a unique character to the images, whether they appeal to anyone I suppose is personal taste. I not only find the effect interesting, but how we use technology to go back to mimic technology of the past. The same could be said for adding grain to images to mimic older films, sepia and selenium toning to mimic aged photographs and older darkroom processing methods. Certainly technology has given us the ability to create new ways of seeing, but it is interesting in that it helps retain the old ways too.
