Finally…Barred Owl in the clear

bi8391.jpgEver since first reporting on this owl at the end of January, today marked my 5th time coming back to this spot to see if I could catch the owl perched in a clearing. I had taken some photographs before, but this owl likes to keep tucked away in these red pines pretty good. So I never got anything worth showing. In fact, I was about to give up hope on this spot of ever catching the owl in a good situation. Today ‘she’ found a pretty photogenic perch to sleep on, not too many branches in the way, and fortunately I decided to give it one more try. I have photographed Barred Owls before, but they were always rehab birds in very controlled settings. A shot of a wild one in such a cooperative setting is a rare find indeed.

  1. Mark, congratulations on your ‘catch’. That is fantastic. Your persistence paid off in a great shot!

  2. Hey Mark, Great shot! Doesn’t it always happen just when one is about to give up!

  3. Your persistence really paid off Mark. You’re right, truly wild shots like this don’t come often.

  4. Thanks guys, I think a lot of pure luck factored into it more than my persistence! :)

  5. congrats! they’re my most favorite owl.. your persistance paid off, although I personally feel owls decide when it’s ok for us to be in their space.. or not. Great shot my friend, I’d be dancing to get this one :) (insert lil toasty icon here)
