Three Bears

three bears photo

Three Bears departing, Kinak Bay, Katmai National Park, Alaska

Somehow this evening I ended up in my unprocessed folder from my 2009 trip to Alaska.   As I poked around a bit reflecting back on how great it was spending so much time around bears, I decided to bring a few out for processing and putting up in my gallery.

These three bears were a mother and her two yearling cubs.   We hung around them quite a bit while we were anchored in Kinak Bay in Katmai National Park.   I remember how one was still quite dependent on mom to catch fish, while the other seemed to be a natural fisherman.

I also remembered how much I liked this particular area of shoreline.  The zig-zag of the shore created a lot of triangles in the frame.   With the three bears, there is quite a bit of repeating threes in the frame.  Even the bears make a triangle.    It isn’t often when so much comes together in one frame.   All I was missing was a little girl named Goldilocks.   Maybe next time.

I added a few more images in my gallery here: Brown bear pictures

  1. awww sweet little bears. One day I want to go and see polar bears :)

  2. Alaska, is a place I would enjoy visiting. So many writers have good things to say about the land and people. And, when you include the wildlife it becomes very enticing. Will you go back?

    • Monte, I hope to someday soon. I am willing to lay money on that you would love it. Seems a flight must be headed there you can get on? :-)

  3. Great shot but I have to ask – Is there any danger involved in being this close?

    • Ken, I didn’t feel I was in any immediate danger. We were around this trio for a few days. They kept their distance, we kept ours. As long as we weren’t there to take their fish, or make any stupid moves, I think we were just fine. At one point they were sleeping in front of us, so that is certainly a sign of trust.

  4. I love how you captured them mid-walk, Mark – those big paws raised. I have never seen a bear in the wild…someday.

  5. It’s good that you said something about Goldilocks at the end there to keep me from writing something corny. Your photograph deserves better. It is superb and interesting.

  6. Depending upon one’s perspective, but being this close to bears it’s not a bad thing when they’re walking away from you. :-) Really nice composition, Mark.

  7. Thank you Sharon, David, and Earl.

Sharon, yes it is interesting you pointed that out, because I have a few in the series with different head positions and leg positions. I selected this as my favorite as it seemed to have the best combination of all.

David – corniness allowed here, no problem.

    Earl – LOL! Good point.
