Nicole Rowell Ryan interviewed by Sierra Club

Written by Mark

Born and raised in Detroit, c. 323 ppm CO2, Mark Graf is a Michigan photographer, naturalist, and diver whose muse is summoned by exploring the endless connections in nature; land, sea, and sky.

A nice interview was recently done by Sierra Club Radio of Nicole Rowell Ryan, the late Galen Rowell’s daughter.   She discusses some of Galen’s favorite images and some of the insights he passed onto her about seeing better images.   So check it out – especially if you have been a longtime fan of Galen’s work, like most of us have.   You can find it at this link (link fixed) – or search for Sierra Club on iTunes.

The Sierra Club is also publishing a retrospective of Galen’s work which I will be sure to pick up soon.  It sounds like it will have some great stories about Galen.

Updated: Sadly I learned that Nicole passed away in 2018.

Like typical Michigan weather, after introducing us to Winter fairly early in December of last year, we had a sudden warm-up this week, where all the snow melted, and the ground started thawing just enough to create some very muddy dogs. I suppose the very warm Arctic...

Winter is usually a slow photography time, but I get out when the conditions call. We've had a good dose of snow this year, but it primarily came over a short period. Nowhere near the amounts some areas impacted by the lake effect snow had. After last year's mild...

Unfortunately, I still use DVDs, but am seriously considering redundant drives. First, the drives are much faster, secondly, there’s not the storage factor. Where do I put all of those DVDs! I just wonder how much is enough. I’ve just finished reading The DAM Book, by Peter Krogh. This guy has so many copies of his images that it is astounding, including off-site backups, etc.

I just started organizing myself, and it is quite a chore. I finally got all of my images backed up to DVD. I feel better now, but still not quite safe. I wonder if you ever feel totally safe. Hmmm.

Thanks for the link. I have to spend almost 2 hours in the car tomorrow and this will make a nice listen on the road.
