LE8930.jpgI was searching through my Lightroom catalog today for a client who was looking for some leaf images and came across this one I had completely forgot about. This is an image where I was playing with some blending modes and a texture. The layered file date is from Dec 2007, and the base image was actually shot in 2006. I have always wanted to spend more time playing around with texture/image combinations, and this old experiment reminded me how interesting they can be. .  I always thought these types of images had a certain dimensional feel to them.

If you aren’t familiar with how this is done, it starts with a base image, and on another layer a photograph or some rendering of a texture. .  By using the blending modes in Photoshop between layers, some selective masking, and even more layering – you can come up with some very creative combinations.

Anyway, I didn’t want to leave this just sitting in a forgotten folder, and thought I would bring it to my gallery today.

Spring Energy

Spring Energy

I made this photo just a few hours ago in our backyard and started working on it this morning. We have a healthy population of Ostrich Ferns (Matteuccia struthiopteris), a native woodland fern here in Michigan. They’ve been the subject of many photos over the years....

Birch Experiments

Birch Experiments

While on a recent hike in the woods, I came upon this Paper Birch (Betula papyrifera) tree that is rare enough to find in these parts of Southeast Michigan. It had its characteristic peeling, but perhaps moreso than I've seen previously, possibly assisted by some...

A Leaf’s Journey

A Leaf’s Journey

It feels like 27°F (- 2 °C). That's what I woke up to this morning, looking at the weather on my phone. As meteorological autumn wraps up its final days, the record warmth we've been experiencing in Michigan is over as we prepare for another seasonal transition. While...

Hi Mark – glad to have run into your site! Your photography is beautiful and I especially love the background of your blog – wow – what an effect!

As for texture photography I experimented a little but have a long, long way to go still. Your picture is beautiful here and I am glad you did not leave it hidden in a folder but shared it with the world 🙂

Mark….I really like the feeling of depth that has been enhanced via the layers. Love the colors as well.

Excellent work. I am going to have to give this a try myself. Thanks for the inspiration.

Hi Mark, this is absolutely beautiful – as all your work – the colour blue adds some ethereal aspect to this photo as well as the textures – that look like some spiderwebs – add even more delicacy.

Nice Mark. I like the tones as well as the texture. It is exciting when you make an image that seemingly defies the limitations of a two-dimensional medium.

Thanks Anita. It is one of those things that has interested me creatively, but I just haven’t dedicated the time to spend doing it with more images. Soon though I will introduce some more.

Oh, dear. Just as I was getting accustomed to spending less time in Photoshop.

The color choices are marvelous. Wonderfully rendered. Are you still doing any of this type of work? I enjoy all your images, but I hope we will see more of this work.
