Gray wolf portrait

Gray wolf portrait

Hey folks, not much to write about lately – just in kind of a funk.  So I thought I would just pull some images from the gallery now and then…more of photoblogging than my babble-blogging.  This is a Black phase gray wolf (or grey if you prefer) photographed last winter – I loved the frosty face.   Other wolf photos in my gallery.   My love for malamutes is probably no surprise given my love for wolves. Read somewhere lately that black wolves have some ancient dog DNA in their history.  Guess it isn’t exactly new news – but fitting for the picture anyway.   Here are some stories: NatGeo NYT

Passerines | Perching Birds | Songbirds

A task that fell off my radar long ago was to create a bird photography gallery for various backyard, songbirds, grassland birds, blackbirds, etc, that didn't quite fit into the other segmented categories I had. But I didn't know what to call this new gallery because...

Friend or Foe Doe

While mining what seems to be a never-ending archive of photos, I stumbled on this photograph of a deer from a park about 30 minutes north of me. And while keywording the image in Lightroom, filling in other metadata, and then doing some slight finishing development...

Following a yellow celebrity

My collection of warbler photographs is not very large, not very large at all. Sometimes I wish I spent more time on them, then again that pretty much applies to a lot of different subjects. That combined with the fact that warbler photography is, at least for me,...

An Impressive portrait, I love the contrast and texture of the image, it certainly is one to be jealous of : )

Love the eyes. I love the animals. I see them as something of a kindred spirit. They seem so independent and wild yet so pack and team oriented too.

  4. Richard Wong

Definitely a fine portrait Mark. I hope you are doing well and able to get out of the funk eventually.

  5. Lana

I hear you on the funk & love the photo, of course. Hang in there, bud.

Hi Marc, you’ve got here quite an impressive gallery of wolf pics. I wonder how you managed to come so close. And where did you exactly take these photos? Really great work. You’ve captured wilderness and intensity at the same time.

Marc – Thanks, it is important to note that they were possible because of controlled conditions at an education / research center where they are mostly secluded from human contact, but I was granted a privilege to go photograph them. To be so close to a truly wild wolf is quite rare.

Thanks Brad, Michael, Earl, Lana and Richard!

Hi Mark, glad to see you back! Wonderful portrait of this amazing creature. I am totally fascinated by them and would love to watch them in the wild. Is this pic taken in a park or have you been lucky to see them in “freedom”? I can never understand why there are still so many ignorant people who call this creature evil and would like to see them disappear entirely from the planet.

    • Mark

Hi Petra, not complete freedom – but not a game farm/park/zoo either. I don’t think I have ever seen a true wild wolf closeup.

When I see a photo that captures this level of intensity in the face of a wild animal I always wonder what thoughts and/or feelings are at work behind those eyes. There’s a hint of power and energy focused almost perfectly in the moment.

Menacing, … and yet so beautiful a face of this animal.
Those eyes are so intriguing in its contrast along with the much darker fur.
    A stunning image!

    Hi Mark,
You have some wonderful wolf portraits.
The always seem to move me in a personal way. like wild beauty in solemn mode.

As for the portrait: all of it has been said. Another of God’s wonderful creatures. Thank you for calling my attention to your galleries.

Glad to see you are getting back to posting. This is a lovely portrait. The eyes just pull you right in.

  16. Andy

    The “eyes” have it!

  17. Paul Grecian

Beautiful portrait, great character. These are still such mis-understood creatures. The depth from nose-to-ears is wonderful.

  18. Mary Ann

Beautiful photograph. Wolves are entrancing and, yes, my malamute also reminded me of a wolf, albeit a bit friendlier.

  19. bernie kasper

Beautiful shot Mark, they are such a regal animal !!

  20. Roberta

Very nice portrait. I see it says Canada – can you provide more information about where?
