Winter landscape

Winter landscapes

At a bit of loss for words lately folks, so just a photo to share… a bit different from the one I posted before. I am sure this landscape doesn’t even exist anymore, which is a pretty cool aspect of shooting these icescapes.   It makes you appreciate the moment even more when the light is happening with some interesting subject matter in front of you.

Winter is usually a slow photography time, but I get out when the conditions call. We've had a good dose of snow this year, but it primarily came over a short period. Nowhere near the amounts some areas impacted by the lake effect snow had. After last year's mild...

Michigan Ice Storm

Last night we were hit with a pretty big ice storm, just as forecasted earlier in the week. The weather folks can take the win on this one - they warned us well in advance. At first, it didn't seem like it would be so bad. But as darkness fell, I noticed the tree...

Snow-covered River Birch

We had our first good drop of snow here in Southeast Michigan this week. Despite some brutally cold temperatures we had prior to Christmas, winter around here seemed a bit delayed - at least visually. The lakes are behind in freezing over. And it just never feels like...

Thank you Ove. I wouldn’t mind some tropical photographs now though. 🙂

That must have been a wonderful moment, too, apart from that the result from it became a lovely photograph. These latitudes have their upsides.

    Hello Mark.

    This is one fine piece!
I love looking at ice floating in the water, especially the depth they have as you see how big they are underneath the surface.

On the southern coast of Norway there is so much ice these days.
At some islands where people are dependent upon ferries to transport them to their work/school on the mainland, the ferries have to go all night long to keep the ice from solid chrystallization.
Can`t wait to get down there to see for myself and maybe get some interesting photos as well 🙂

    Fantastic icescape, Mark.
    Take care.

    Best Wishes

These icescapes are so…other worldly… Awesome scene Mark.

Thanks Amber. I agree, they do seem to resemble some fantasy world.

Thanks folks! Appreciate it a lot.

Dick B; yes, I am in Michigan, about 30 minutes drive from this spot, so it makes it easy to roll out of the bed in the morning and head straight back to warm up. 🙂

    Hello Mark,
Very nice capture at St. Lake Claire in Michigan! Love your post processing. Are you actually from Michigan? I reside in Saint Joseph, MI Again very well done, and glad I found your site!

  8. Brad Mangas

Another stunner Mark. The tones in these are spectacular. BTW I like your answer to Carl.

    Absolutely incredible!
Images such as these almost makes me want to get out up there in your cold weather. This southern boy would need mega-multiple layers on though!

C’mon up Michael – we’ll take along a firepit just for you. 😉

      • Michael Brown

Well Mark, I’m not so sure that even a fire pit would help to be honest with you.
The older I get, … well, … that chilly “wuss” factor comes in to play! : )

Another excellent shot of an amazing scene! As you point out, this surely isn’t there anymore. The transitory nature of ice makes it a really interesting subject. I’d like to see more…

    Hey Mark,

Sweet light! Looks like you have mastered the HDR!

Thanks Ron, sorry your comment was binned to my spam que and luckily I noticed it.

Mark, I’d have a hard time picking between this one and the vertical one, both are excellent!

I guess I never thought about these particular icescapes photos being so unique. Very cool!

  13. Tomas Turecek

This is also great image but I prefer the vertical, that is stunning. It seems to be a bit hectic time of year now – a lot of work, no time for visiting blogs and sharing thought. I’m in the same situation.

    • Mark

Thanks Tomas, much the same here.

  14. Carl D

    Hey Mark

Oh yeah, I like this a lot. Very nicely done.

    HDR or a GND?

    Cheers

Hey Carl, I like that you have to ask. 🙂 Thanks!!!
