Snacks in the woods

When I am driving to a spot before sunrise, or coming back from a hike – or simply out in the field waiting for something to happen – I get the munchies! I tend to eat a great number of Clif Bars – particularly the peanut butter kind. Healthy for you and pretty filling, easy to pack in a camera backpack or pocket. Recently I have been also buying LARABARS – which have a bit smoother texture and consistency than Clif Bars and are also quite good. I am in the process of ‘sampling’ more of their flavors. 🙂 They are made from 100% whole food, with no more than 6 total ingredients per flavor which they take a lot of pride in. I like their company philosophy, they even have a blog.

“Our company name comes from an ancient belief that food falls into two categories:

BECKONING FOODS
which beckon consumption again and again, sapping the body of energy without any real health benefits, Today, they’re called “junk foods.”

HUMM FOODS
on the other hand, resonate with energy in a whole, natural state. When consumed, they cause you to feel vibrant and alive.”

With water of course, I could probably live off these things for a week in the wilderness.

I am just wondering what others bring along for snacks when out photographing, birding, or simply hiking in the woods. Please share!

Yearly favorites were harder to choose this past year simply because there weren't many exposures overall. I imagine that's an inherent problem with these yearly favorites posts. It emphasizes product over process in a culture that demands constant output. It can...

Continuing with a tradition that began in 2007, I am once again finalizing some of my favorite images from the past year. I guess you could call this Volume 18. Wow, eighteen years of this stuff.1 Nonetheless, It is a process that forces me to consider which...

Twenty Twenty-three

This past year saw a continuation of a trend that has persisted since the Covid shutdowns - staying very close to home, if not in my backyard for most of my photography. To title this year's Yearly Favorites a series of "Visions of a Hermit" would not be too far off....

Hi Mark – these are delicious for sure and it is nice to know that we can enjoy tasty snack without all of the junk that we typically find in other snack foods!

I used to eat granola bars, but after I really examined their ingredients and labels, it was goodbye granola bars and hello LaraBars 🙂

Cappuccino on the drive to and a mix of beef jerkey and cereal bars – the kind that mix the cereal with milk – while birding. Of course, anything that isn’t too messy and allows for one-handed binocular holding is all right!

For me, water, trail mix, power bars, or beef jerky. I prefer water and jerky, although the turkey and cheese sounds much better!!!

OK, I am sensing a trend here – who doesn’t like peanut butter crackers! Those are another that I tend to stock up on.

Granola bars, dried fruit, peanut butter crackers, and of course some water.

A few weeks ago, my youngest son Joseph went with me on a trip.
I asked him did he have what he wanted for lunch packed into his bag. He said yes.
Some hours later, and out in the swamp, I told him that I was getting hungry.
We sat down to eat, and when he pulled out his lunch, it was about a quarter of his grandma’s pound cake, … and that was all he had.

    Kids!

(He’s nuts over grandma’s pound cake!)

I wish I could say junk food isn’t a part of my diet – but Little Debbie sometimes makes me say YUMMM instead of HUMMM. 🙂 Only in moderation right?!

Hey Mark, before I started in nature photography six years ago and began spending all my time shooting I spent a lot of time seeking outdoor adventures (mountaineering, ice clinbing, dog sledding, backpacking, kayaking, mountain biking, etc.). These activities would require me to carry light weight easy to pack energy bars. At first I really thought they were good but after eating so many of these bars I became tired of them. In 2001 I did a climb on Mt. Rainier and as always had my energy bars with me. The group I was with stopped to take a break and I pulled out my bars and water and I remember one guy opened his pack and remove a bag with some food to eat. I’ll never forget how envious I was of him when he pulled out a big hunk of cheese and some turkey slices while I sat there eating my bars that by this time I was about ready to gag on. From that point on I vowed to carry real food when I go out. I will say I can stomach the Kellogg cerial bars, there not to bad. I love junk and fast foods and don’t worry about the heath risk. I’m gonna be dead a long time so I’m gonna eat and be happy until my time is up.

I take what ever I’m hungry for that will fit in my pack.

I hope you know I feel I must keep up my’ slice of pie’ status now 😉
I enjoy granola bars and nutri-grain bars and almost always have a baggie of home-made trail mix in my pack (raisins, coconut, dried apricots and dried pineapple). I’m hypoglycemic and the medication I’m on leaves me very weak, so I also carry a small plastic container of OJ along with a couple bottles of good ol h20 (and I keep chocolate handy too, just in case). We often take apples and oranges out with us, and I like those little pnut butter/cracker deals for a quick snack once in awhile.
Oh, I love beef jerky too- venison jerky is even better 🙂
    Now I’m hungry!
