First Blackbird

Written by Mark

I heard my first Red-winged Blackbird of the season today   Despite a lot of snow on the ground, at least it is one small sign spring won’t be too much longer  If not, these birds are in for a long wait    He was probably calling out to complain “Why did I come back so early???!”

Passerines | Perching Birds | Songbirds

A task that fell off my radar long ago was to create a bird photography gallery for various backyard, songbirds, grassland birds, blackbirds, etc, that didn't quite fit into the other segmented categories I had. But I didn't know what to call this new gallery because...

Friend or Foe Doe

While mining what seems to be a never-ending archive of photos, I stumbled on this photograph of a deer from a park about 30 minutes north of me. And while keywording the image in Lightroom, filling in other metadata, and then doing some slight finishing development...

My collection of warbler photographs is not very large, not very large at all. Sometimes I wish I spent more time on them, then again that pretty much applies to a lot of different subjects. That combined with the fact that warbler photography is, at least for me,...

Thanks Howard, Boyd, Sky and Gowri.

Howard, yeah, fortunately there is a spot not too far from me with this setting – where you have the option of a same color background or also a mixed blue one. Both work pretty good.

Really beautiful shot. I like the way the plant the bird is on sort of echoes the colors of the blurred background. Nice catchlight in the eyes as well. Looking forward to Spring!

Mark I can understand what he is saying. Beautiful photo. One of my favorite birds. I know where one is nesting and plan to get some shots for a painting. The red and black are so dramatic. Great photo.

Namaste’ Mark! Oh does this beautiful animal have the tales to tell of the sights it has seen! Gorgeous.

Great shot Mark, I hope this is a harbinger of things to come, we have 12 inches of snow here today. I am officially tired of winter if I haven’t said so already 🙂

Sweet image Mark, love the epaulets. My wife said she heard one here in Bucks Co., PA the other day.

I love the first signs of spring!

Marvellous photo, Mark. Never seen these – don’t think that they exist here in Germany.

Great photo! Excellent detail in the dark feathers. Come on, spring.

@wren: Given the severity of this winter, I guess I would expect them to come back maybe a little bit later. I didn’t keep good records either. Looking at all the snow, it would be too early for me! 🙂 Nonetheless, it is nice hearing the familiar song again.

I haven’t seen one yet, and I was thinking they’d been back earlier last year. I don’t have good records on first sighting, so perhaps I’m misremembering.

Congratulations on the blackbird! Look at how pleased he seems with himself. *L* Spring IS coming!
