Michigan winter pictures

Clinton River in snow, image #WI-9552

I shall be snowy, no, wait, I will be warm, no, maybe some ice, no, bitter cold, no, how about some rain?    We have been on a roller coaster ride in our temperatures here for months.   This is turning into the craziest winter in my recent memory.  I have only had to shovel twice since November (not that I am complaining on that part).

This snowy scene was just last Sunday with snow we basically received that day.  The day before, we had nothing. I had a couple of hours to do an evening hike in the woods.   This river is about a 10-15 minute walk from my house.   The woods were beautifully covered in snow.

Yesterday, it was 55 deg F – and all gone.   Michigan’s Winter is having an identity crisis.   How many personalities have we yet to see?   Blink and you might just miss something.  I must say I am somewhat liking the unpredictability, instead of day in and day out of cold weather.

Winter is usually a slow photography time, but I get out when the conditions call. We've had a good dose of snow this year, but it primarily came over a short period. Nowhere near the amounts some areas impacted by the lake effect snow had. After last year's mild...

Michigan Ice Storm

Last night we were hit with a pretty big ice storm, just as forecasted earlier in the week. The weather folks can take the win on this one - they warned us well in advance. At first, it didn't seem like it would be so bad. But as darkness fell, I noticed the tree...

Snow-covered River Birch

We had our first good drop of snow here in Southeast Michigan this week. Despite some brutally cold temperatures we had prior to Christmas, winter around here seemed a bit delayed - at least visually. The lakes are behind in freezing over. And it just never feels like...

    Thanks Neroli.

Oh boy, that image really is a treat when you open it up full size. Thanks for the info for that photoshop plugin also. I’ll have to look into that one.

    very beautiful image.
what is your process techniques…is it output from Nik ?

    • Mark

Hello to Nepal and thank you! 🙂
This particular image I blended two exposures in Photomatix and used the B/W option there. I then brought it into Photoshop and used some slight Tonal Contrast using Nik Color Efex 4.0.

Your black and whites are right up there with your very fine color. In Northern California we’ve had an unusual winter, not schizo. Dry: Very little snow or rain. Seems to be weird all over.

A strange year indeed David. Thank you very much, I am glad you liked this image.

The white snow in the scrubs against that ink black water, how could a colour image possibly look any better than this? 🙂 Nice work, Mark!

Thank you Ove! Has this week been bitterly cold for you? I have seen news reports and heard from people I know that Europe is in a bit of a freeze at the moment.

      • Ove

Indeed it had, but it’s starting to look better now. I’m hopelessly optimistic in that respect…

Mark, here, it’s been like an extend late Autumn that is heading into perhaps an early Spring. No snow and no ice with only a few mornings of real cold and frost. Flowers are starting to bloom and trees are beginning to bud. I worry a bit about what this may mean for our upcoming summer.

Absolutely beautiful B&W photo — well worth the short hike.

I have been wondering the same thing Earl. With very little snow fall, our wildflower season is likely to be delayed or greatly diminished.

Once larger size appeared on my screen, I felt I would be able to see my breath before me. What stunning luminosity in this.

People joke about the fact that we all talk about the weather (and, apparently, humans have for centuries). I suppose that is because the weather so seldom follows predictable patterns. Seasons are often filled with periods of weather that make no sense for the time of year. Our Winter certainly has been peculiar.

And now we post about it too. 🙂 Thanks for the comments Anita.

I’ve read a lot of complaints about the weather lately but the fact is that snow is a lot of work for some of us. I like to see it in the parks and at the lake, but I really don’t miss it very much on a daily basis. Last year we had almost twice our average snowfall, so we’re just averaging it out this year.
I really like this photo. Just the right amount of snow.

    • Mark

Yeah, I can’t say I miss shoveling Ken. I keep wondering if it is just “delayed” or this will turn out to be one of the winters with little snow here.

We have cloudy skies this morning and expecting a winter storm to move into the area later this afternoon with 5-10 inches of snow. That will make my flying tomorrow a bit nasty. We need the moisture, so bring it on. I put the shovel up a few years ago when I moved into my condo and now pay someone to shovel. Now I complain about the HOA fees. 🙂

Love this image. it almost has an infrared feel to it.

    • Mark

We used to live in a condo Monte, I can remember those dealings with the HOA fondly. 😉
