I have been at a bit of a loss of words or image inspiration of late. Loss of words I suppose is a poor way to put it, it is actually too many words and thoughts that take some effort to sort through and organize in any type of coherent manner. So much going on in the world. To compensate for my ineptitude, I decided on a “roll of the dice” to pick an image.

In my Lightroom catalog, I simply went to my Library and spun the little scroll wheel on my mouse. Wherever the pointer landed, I would post that image, regardless of how much I liked it, disliked it, or even if it was destined for the trash bin. So here you have it. An image picked entirely by chance. Interestingly enough, the exposure was made on my birthday last year – go figure.

It could get interesting if I start making a habit of this.

Plum Brook Preserve

Plum Brook Preserve

One year ago, I wrote about a bit of a rabbit hole I stepped into regarding the name of a local city-owned nature preserve and confusion over some naming on the maps of a couple of streams that run through or around the Plum Brook Nature Preserve (aka. Sterling...

Michigan Aurora Redux

The evening of October 10, 2024 ( a KP index of 9!) brought another spectacular solar storm our way, triggering displays of the Aurora Borealis across Michigan and elsewhere. The Aurora Borealis appears more frequently at lower latitudes because we are likely...

Chance is a mysterious thing, isn’t it? Again, your honest approach to this post is really refreshing, Mark. These are such bizarre times…and today the news from Michigan just adds to the horror. I think your experiment worked nicely. You might imagine I’d like this image, and I do. The focus changing gradually throughout the image is really nice.

The sad thing is, I don’t find it that surprising of what is in the news about Michigan right now. We’ve always had a certain contingent of these types here, and the extreme rhetoric about our Governor has really ratcheted up this year. Thank you for the kind words on the photo.

I like the idea of randomness in editing, since there was evidently “something” that motivated you to press the shutter button in the first place but also “something” that prevented you from otherwise choosing that photo previously.

You are likely right on both counts Tom. There are little nitpicky things I likely got hung up on, but not enough to delete it entirely. Who knows sometimes!

I like the simplicity of the image and the simple story it tells. So, good job as far as I’m concerned. It would be interesting to know what was running through you mind or what may have been going on in your life when you took this image. They have a major impact on what we see through our viewfinder.

My best blog posts, poems, stories, and conversations are usually transpiring in my head. Oh, sometimes I am able to get them on paper before they disappear into some deep hole in the universe. I believe I relate. There are days when my journal only has a couple of sentences and other days there’s a couple of pages of thoughts and feelings. I’ve come to accept that as normal, my normal at least.

And the state of the world does have an affect on me. Sometimes it’s fear, or anger, even confusion as to how people can think and act as they do. For some it’s a door to depression. I look for blog posts like yours where you write transparently, letting us know where you’re at but from a pretty stable place. I consider the blog I following to be a stable social media. So, I’m grateful for your openness to share as do all of the blogs I follow.

Like you I have many unprocessed images on my hard drive. This was a really nice one even if by chance. Very neat idea! Hope you do it again.

      Thanks Howard.

I like this idea Mark. I can’t imagine too many misses from you though. As for having “too many words and thoughts”, yeah, I can relate to that all too well. With my last few posts I counted that I had well over 200,000 words in my notes. For only four drafts. Finding coherence in all that has meant lots of late nights so can’t wait till that’s done. Might have to consider something like what you’re doing with this post in future. Though it will have to be a little different. My collection of photos is far too small, and the number of duds far too high to make “rolling the dice” an entertaining proposition for readers 🙂

I see some value in just a free-flow of thoughts. I wish I could be more like that. Sometimes I spend too much time editing, rewording, shortening, lengthening some posts, which tends to plant the idea of it being work in my head, which helps fuel some procrastination.

Trust me, I have plenty of misses. I appreciate that vote of confidence, but I think I am just as guilty as others in not revealing those too much. From the “what were you thinking” ones to others that I once thought were good, but no longer to “wow, that really sucks.” I cover the entire range with diversity! 🙂

So where did this image fall on your own scale of like? I don’t think you came out badly with this one. I’m afraid the odds would be stacked greatly against me if I did the same…hundreds to one even. 😉

I understand having too many and not enough words/thoughts. Let’s just say it’s 2020 and let it go at that. ?

    • Mark

I am undecided on it honestly. It didn’t go to the front of the line in developing after capture, but didn’t get deleted either.

Oh – and for this year – I definitely have the 2020 blues.
