A side effect of being a bit distracted lately is that I completely did not register that it was the first day of Autumn (for us Northern Hemispherites) today. It took the mention of the Autumn Equinox in an email for it to spark an “oh yeah…” moment in my head.
So continuing with a spontaneity trick I used to select the image in my last post, I did the same thing again here. I did filter the images beforehand to be only “Autumn” keyworded images so I didn’t end up with a spring flower or something. I can’t go too crazy with this idea of leaving picks to chance. With a spin of the mouse wheel, I ended up with this one from Oct 2015 from some time spent along the Lake Superior shoreline. It seems to communicate the wide variety of conditions we can see in the Great Lakes region this time of year.
Cold mornings have already settled in here for the most part. Heavier coats and layers in the morning for dog walks, cool autumn breezes through mid-day (perfect for outdoor chores), to t-shirt weather for late afternoon dog walks. To a dog, I imagine these humans constantly changing outfits seem a bit strange.
I always welcome the cooler weather and additional character in the colors and textures of the woods this time of year. I can practically taste the cider and donuts right now.
Update 23Sep2020: In my haste to push this post out I hadn’t realized right away that the original image I put up had a bit too much of an overall warm cast. While I like warmer tones when it comes to autumn color, the sky and snow/water/shoreline work better with white balance correction. I am leaving both up here with an image-compare module so you can see the difference.

I like this honest celebration of the equinox. The warm cast is a little puzzling I guess, because my mind thinks, well, the sand could be that color but is that snow? 😉 I really like your choice to explain what happened and show the two versions.
Thanks Lynn. Sometimes I don’t always catch these color casts.
Wow, I like the cooler image. We are enjoying the cooler mornings and evenings with warm afternoons. It’s layers out here for this time of the year. We actually had some blue sky today as the smoke from the fire is not as bad.
Thanks Monte. Good news on the blue sky for you!
(Sorry your comment was held up, your email addy was flagged as ‘new’)
And for us down-under it marked the first day of Spring. I’d like to say it meant new flowers, new growth on trees and a change of wardrobe, but alas in Queensland, it looks and feels almost like any other day of the year 🙂
A gorgeous looking scene in your photo. Reminds me that I didn’t spend anywhere near enough time around the Great Lakes when travelling around the US and Canada. Maybe next time. If there is ever a next time.
Enjoy the changes Mark, as well as the cider and donuts. That’s a combination I could go for.
There are times I do yearn for a bit more stability in the weather ala Queensland, San Diego, etc. I should be thankful though we are spared many of the more dramatic impacts. Cider + donuts + warm temps usually mean more hornets hanging around though – so, pass on that. 🙂
