Maybe it is a little too cliche to see such symbolism in this image, but it was what was on my mind when making the exposure and also in developing it. The forest floor was certainly in a state of change at the time. Plants pulling back, new forest feeding materials falling all around. The roots are just there, bearing witness to changes around them, year after year, season after season.

There is no shortage of wisdom in trees.

Jimmy Carter 1924-2024

Thank you, Jimmy Carter, RIP 1924-2024 While I do not have a photo of me with the former President, I do have photos that are direct results of one of his acts, the 1980 Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA), which created the Katmai National Park...

Winter Solstice for 2023 will be arriving here in EST within a short time of this posting. I have often wondered about a world that could be united around the solstices instead of any particular religious holiday. It does celebrate something that all life on Earth has...

Oh wow! I love this image. It amazes me the strength the roots have in supporting a tree. On Sunday we some trees blown down due to the high winds. One as a block away. It was one mature tree with two trunks. The roots held their ground but the tree broke just above the ground, on both trunks. One fell on a condo damaging the roof and the other fell to an open area. And, most of the root system is not even seen. I’ll say it again, I love this image!

Appreciated Monte. I also am amazed at how some trees fall at times.

Tree roots are certainly amazing and make wonderful photo subjects. I like how you developed this image, Mark. “Strong,” a good word for roots as well as for this image.

I always thought they might make for a good photo essay. I certainly have a quite a few root pics, just have never organized them into such. Thanks Earl.

Thanks Howard. It is quite amazing to think about how strong roots must be. They have a big job! 🙂

Yes, especially when you see these trees that are hanging off the edge on hillsides.
