It seems rather funny for a nature photographer to say, particularly when we often are out trying to photograph at the best color times of the day. But quite often, it isn’t color that really defines the subject matter of an image – it is texture, patterns, lines, or simply its graphical design. For this particular shot of these showy lady slippers, I was more intrigued by the graphical arrangement between the two buds and how the leaves connected them. In color, I thought this shot was just OK – something just didn’t seem to connect. But upon reminding myself that color wasn’t even part of what I was trying to capture here and making the image its true self in black&white – I was much more satisfied with the end result.

I have to agree with you, that the color would be a distraction in this photo! I have always enjoyed b&w photography, and find myself shooting more these past couple of weeks. There are so many wonderful films out there, too!
