F is for F*%@!

Oh yes, a great letter in the AtoZChallenge, and none other than the “F word!”   The expletive that could be used on any number of occasions as a photographer.  Hmm, I am sure I uttered it or something to the effect on a few occasions…sometimes it just comes out.

  • quicksand

    Look out for sand pockets!

Having sand collapse beneath my feet falling in to my thigh level because of a hidden sink hole in some dunes

  • Normally on the ice I am pretty cautious, but a few times I tested an area I probably shouldn’t have.  Nothing deep mind you, but enough to get my shoe and good portion of my pants wet.
  • That instant when mucking through a wet area and you feel your shoe sucked off your foot because the mud grabbed it
  • Forgetting that you positioned your camera on the very edge of your quick release clamp for position, and then lifting it out of the car that way – and it wasn’t fully secured…. over your concrete driveway
  • Cruising slowly (like everyone else) Cade’s Cove in the Smoky Mountains with your fairly new Jeep looking for bears and feeling the smack into your rear bumper of someone who was doing more looking than driving.
  • Even underwater, realizing your backup pocket camera in a housing you had strapped to your vest wasn’t so securely strapped after all, and now is likely on the shores of Cuba.
  • Finding out the current is a bit too heavy for your regulator on the way to a wreck and it begins feeding you more water than air
  • Realizing that important three-legged thingy you normally have attached to your hip is really 30 miles away at home.

Perhaps I should warn him about Detroit drivers... :-)

Perhaps I should warn him about Detroit drivers…

  • Seeing your out of town guest (you know who you are! 🙂 ) so absorbed in photographing some run down house and being a little too trusting of Detroit drivers.  🙂
  • While out on a hike, coming across something that looks like some alien spawn and uttering “What the f*%@! is that?!!”

DANGER! Alien Spores

I could go on, but I’d rather read some instances from you folks…

Fusion Series

The Fusion Series is a pairing of my fondness for playing with multiple exposures with the aspects of connectivity in nature. With spring wildflower season well underway, it is important to remember a wildflower doesn't exist in isolation. It is a product of the soil...

In honor of 2022-02-22 or 22-02-2022 but certainly not the bizarre order of 02-22-2022 (apparently we Americans don't do metric and we can't get our dates in a logical order like the rest of the world), published at 22:22 ET - here are some photographs celebrating the...

Elementals

My mind is and has been, toying with a concept for quite a long time now. It is difficult to put in words, let alone imagery. It is the concept of the dynamic dichotomy that exists around us with destruction vs. protection, life vs. death, forest vs. trees, assembly...

First of all, I work in a factory so dropping F bombs is like breathing.

I don’t use it too much out in the field. Usually it’s because of my own stupidity or someone else’s.

The first one that comes to mind was in Utah where a couple other photographers and I were filming a ring tailed cat.
One photographer decided he wanted to get closer and stepped right in front of me and planted his tripod.

After I dropped the F bomb, he turned and looked and could obviously see that he was blocking my shot. He just turned and kept shooting the cat until it ran up the cliff face.

Another time again in Utah was some friends I was with were jumping over openings in the rocks with a drop of about 3000 feet below if you missed the landing.

Taking a run with a loaded Super Photo Trekker and a tripod I probably let out the longest and most high pitched f bomb as I sailed over the opening between the rocks!

Ha, for those occasions it would seem would be appropriately combined with a “you” and a “that” (stated before such a jump). 🙂

Its something of a joke at my house, my use of the f-word that is. I picked it up in grade school–shocking, I’m sure (not). And yes, I do have kids (try not to say it in front of them…which works surprisingly well the younger they are!) And I’ve only said it at church once. haha…the look on my friends face…well, life is for living, I say. Great post! Not sure I should suggest you keep up the F-moments for our entertainment though. 🙂

There are certain situations where it just comes out! 🙂 Trust me, I try to count all of the above as lessons learned, and avoid repeat occurences.

Mark, here’s an event for which I’m witnessed that particular word being used around the RV World…not by me in this case, I installed a value to avoid this. Upon arriving at a new park and beginning to connect up, pulling the cap off the RV “black-water” pipe on your rig to realize that somehow the black tank value was opened or leaked during the drive…filling the pipe and quickly dumping raw sewage out at your feet. All your neighbors can smell what you did! LOL

I can only imagine what a horrible experience that must be!

Wasn’t expecting that from you! Myou use of word was when I picked up my tripod with a Nikon D100 with an 80-400mm VR lens on top and hearing it all go thunk as it hit the ground. I said it again when I picked it up and saw the bent lens. Then I cried! 🙁

    • Mark

Justified use Monte! Hey, need to keep things unexpected around here.

LOL, gritting teeth and crying with you on this post. By the way, who in the world is that idiot photographing in the middle of the road? You would think he would have more sense than that. 😉

    • Mark

Ha, comes with the territory right?

I don’t think I’d call that guy an idiot. I just had a bit of obligation to make sure he could continue his long journey without broken legs or bullet holes. 🙂

Some days only the F bomb will do! It sounds like you have much better excuses than most of us. Be careful out there…I never realized photography was so dangerous.

Compared to those experiences, I have no reason to use the f-word! Makes my stubbed toe or video game death seem not worthy enough for such a swear, lol.

    • Mark

Guilty – I may have uttered it on a video game death as well. 😉

  8. Paul

😀 I remember some of those incidents! I’m still looking for your camera that you lost a few years back. I’ve not run across it yet; however, I haven’t been to Cuba, either, so there’s still hope!

    • Mark

Well Mr. World Traveler, seems you already have your next trip … 🙂
