It is probably safe to say my season of winter photography has come to a conclusion. While March brings some highly unpredictable weather, and freezing temperatures are still in the forecast in the coming week, it is unlikely to create any big shifts now that the momentum of Meteorological Spring has begun.

I am not a prolific winter landscape photographer, but I do manage to get out. This year I ventured up the coast of Michigan’s Thumb twice to explore icy landscapes on Lake Huron. I paid homage to Lake St. Clair a couple of times, which always offers interesting ice formations. I only went out once in my local woodland.

The time of transition is always an interesting one. Storms will come, ice will fade, dogs will be muddy, and perhaps some new ideas to explore for the coming season will enter my head.

Developing note: I am really starting to use Topaz Sharpen AI on a more regular basis. Quite frankly, it is almost like having a brand new camera with the amazing sharpness, detail, and cleanliness this software brings to so many images. It seems to eliminate any detrimental losses due to diffraction. And in this image, since I wanted to use f/22 to get the sunburst, there was some softness from diffraction, even though the image is 36MP from my Nikon D810, and one of the sharpest lenses I have the Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8. I think the difference is quite obvious in the before/after screenshot below.

Aurora Borealis in Michigan

Aurora Borealis in Michigan

Unless you've been living under a rock for the weekend, it is no surprise to see thousands of images from the extreme G5 geomagnetic storm, which triggered auroras down to Florida—reportedly the largest in 20 years. Many people seeing the aurora for the first time,...

Autumn Fog

It's been a bit of a rare occurrence lately where I go to let our dogs out in the morning and am instantly struck by how beautiful it is outside. Like - run inside and grab your camera beautiful out. Even though there have been some nice sunrises this time of year, I...

I should go back there

Working on this photograph today brought all sorts of thoughts into my head. First, it was - this was a cool place, I should go back there. Then I think - wait - I made this exposure 9 years ago, and am only getting to it now. Shouldn't I catch up with my backlog...

A stunning image, Mark. It seems I have ventured out more this winter although I do not have the Great Lakes to photograph. I have not tried the AI software but have know you and Earl use it.

      Agreed!

Very nice, Mark. I’ve been tempted to employ the AI software but have yet to pull the trigger. Have you compared it with the LR sharpening?

    • Mark

IMO, it blows LR sharpening away – this is an entirely new level. Takes a while to complete on my ancient computer, but results so far have always impressed me. Definitely worth the trial period just to see for yourself.
